Ulay - In Photography plot
Visual artist Ulay (pseudonym for Uwe Laysiepen) was born in 1943 in Germany. Although he became known worldwide through performances with his then wife Marina Abramovic, Ulay's photographic oeuvre remained relatively unknown. In the form of a poetic narration, filmmaker Marjoleine Boonstra made a portrait of an artist who constantly pushes boundaries in a search for new photographic forms. For example, the film shows the obscure and shocking photos that Ulay made after he exchanged Germany for Amsterdam in 1968 for reasons of principle. It also shows how he prepares for an exhibition in Berlin and the camera in Australia witnesses a nocturnal Aboriginal ceremony in tribute to his old teacher 'Charlie' Watuma Taruru Tjapaltjari.
