The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley plot

"Visionary. Billionaire. Fraud?"

At the age of 19, entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes devises an ingenious concept: a handy device that can signal countless diseases via a drop of blood. With her start-up Theranos, she raised billions from investors like Bill Clinton and Betsy DeVos, but she cheated. In the documentary, it becomes clear that Holmes had lied all together to attract investors. The technology used was not good and the blood tests were found to be ineffective. The US stock watchdog SEC has filed a case against her for misleading investors. The company is now worth nothing at all.

Good documentary about Elizabeth Holmes who starts her own company at a young age and becomes extremely successful. A fascinating story about a company worth in the billions that turns out to be based on lies. It is amazing to see how long appearances can be kept up. The person Elizabeth Holmes herself could perhaps have been highlighted a bit better. But that is difficult since she herself obviously did not participate in this documentary.

This documentary was recently on TV and was caught once. I didn't know the story, but found it interesting. Despite the theme of blood tests, it was still interesting. Furthermore, it was still nicely presented. Worth seeing once.

I binge-watched The Dropout with Amanda Seyfried last week, but I found it disappointing, despite Seyfried giving a great performance. The problem with the series is that it was too fictionalized and the interactions with lawyers, senior executives and staff were written with little credibility. Sometimes to the point of stupidity, with silly jokes and copouts because the writer apparently doesn't know how people in that business communicate with each other.

Instead of a strong story, it became a strange mix of drama, comedy and thriller. Funny at times but it didn't tell the full story.

Then rather the real thing, with archive footage of the 'real' Elizabeth Holmes: the documentary The Inventor on HBO Max.

Production-wise it is a fine documentary, with interviews with the key figures in the rise and fall of Theranos. Visually, it's all well supported with authentic footage of Holmes and her partner Sunny Balwani, as well as snippets of her interviews and marketing clips.

What I did miss, however, was a look inside the head of Holmes herself: her sociopathic nature, her pathological lies, how everyone could be so passionate about a woman who never blinks, puts on a low fake voice, and rakes in millions without any actual to provide proof of a working product... Psychologically interesting questions, but unfortunately the documentary focuses more on how Theranos itself was exposed. Also interesting, but of course I already knew part of the overall course of her demise from The Dropout.

Still worth a look, if only for the bizarre history.

3.5*
