The Gates plot
The artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude have lived in New York since 1964, but have never been able to realize one of their high-profile projects there. In 1979, they come up with an ambitious plan to create a work of art in Central Park, entitled The Gates. For them, the process leading to the realization of a project is an essential part of the artwork. That is why at an early stage they ask the Maysles brothers, with whom they have collaborated before, to make a film about their new work. It will be an extremely long-term project. In the filmed footage from 1979 (to which David, Albert Maysles' brother, who died in 1987, also contributed) it appears that the New Yorkers are not very positive about the plans and it seems that everything will not go through. But in 2003 a different wind blows and the project is still approved. The camera follows the developments closely. The filmmakers are present at the negotiations, they record the erection of the many orange poles, the opening of the cocoons with the orange cloths and the reactions of the large crowds of audiences in February 2005.
