The Cradock Murders plot

One winter evening in June 1985, the car of Matthew Goniwe and three friends was stopped on a mountain pass near Port Elizabeth by members of the South African Security Service. The four were murdered, mutilated and burned to cover all traces. With this assassination, ordered from the highest echelons, the regime sought to silence one of the most critical and efficient opponents of apartheid. The political assassination of the Craddock Four led to a state of emergency that heralded the end of apartheid five years later.
