Stolperstein plot
Stolpersteine - literally Stumbling Stones - are actually the largest decentralized monument in the world. A memorial to victims of the Nazi regime. The Stolpersteine are a design by Gunter Demnig, who received the German "Preis für Demokratie und Toleranz" for it. A total of 13,000 brass memorial stones bearing the names of Nazi victims have already been placed in European sidewalks. Most can be found in Germany, but there are also similar initiatives in the Netherlands, for example in Borne, Hilversum and Weesp. Stolpersteine are an example of how history suddenly appears in a confrontational way in everyday life. The documentary shows how Stolpersteine touched a nerve and provoked the debate about the past, responsibility and memory. The film goes beyond registering the opposing reactions to the Stolpersteine and the artist's motives. Above all, the maker wants to show how the project triggered an avalanche of reactions under which the artist herself was in danger of being buried.
