Cherry Duyns, with the help of biographer Gert Kerschbaumer, tells the turbulent and tragic story of Stefan Zweig, one of the most widely read and translated writers of the 1930s. The Austrian lived in Salzburg, but also traveled the world. To keep coming back to his 'Villa Europa'. Then the Second World War came into view and everything changed. He fled with his second wife while his "Jewish" books were burned. Finally Zweig settled down in Petrópolis, depressed, where he ended his life in 1942. He left a lot behind. Even before the war, Zweig had been impressed by the construction of the Panama Canal. The construction turned out to be a fraudulent scandal, while many workers died of malaria. Zweig probably started his sketch for a feature film in the early 1930s. A love story that has never been filmed against the background of the financial malpractice in the construction of the canal.
