Sombra di Koló plot
“Sombra di Koló” brings us into the world of thirty islanders from the Caribbean island of Curaçao, and shows the influence of race and skin color on their daily lives. Cultural anthropologist Angela Roe is told by her Curaçao aunt that she is not allowed to take a dark-skinned partner home with her. Touched and amazed, she decides to investigate the underlying motives: why has Curaçao been struggling with a color hierarchy for centuries? And: why has the subject been taboo on the island for so long? Her search takes her all over the island, from a small village in the countryside to Spanish Water, the richest neighborhood of Curaçao. She speaks with islanders from all walks of life about origin, class, family relationships and the diverse society of the Caribbean island. The pride and joy of this colorful society is interspersed with genuine shame and frustrations that are still painfully present due to racial inequality.
