Portrait of the life of Richard Berkowitz, a progressive gay S&M escort, who became active as an AIDS activist in the 1980s and who never received the recognition he deserved for his contributions to the creation of the concept of safe sex. Berkowitz witnessed first-hand the outbreak of an epidemic disease in the gay world and long before this disease was given the name AIDS, Berkowitz was already campaigning for safe sex for gay and straight. The well-known virus specialist Dr. Joseph Sonnabend was also convinced that AIDS was more than just a new virus. Bolstered by Dr. Joseph Sonnabend's theory, Berkowitz teamed up with activist and musician Michael Callen to promote safe sex to save lives. Many of his friends are now dead, he has no money and he still lacks appreciation for his work. 'Sex Positive' shows us sex, death and betrayal and places safe sex in a new context.
