After many years of hard work, 23-year-old Selena Quintanilla, with her band Los Dinos, won over Mexico and large parts of the US with an infectious mix of Tejano and Cumbia. On March 31, she was shot dead by the president of her fan club. This one-sided portrait draws a direct comparison to The Jacksons: the father led the band with a firm hand; every family member was assigned a role, and the youngest of the bunch (Selena) became the face of the group. The eulogy from Selena's surviving relatives can certainly not be called objective, even though Castro uses a wealth of archival footage to prove Selena's charismatic personality. Particularly interesting is how Selena Y Los Dios developed musically and gradually found the path to great success. Selena laid the foundation for the career of Jennifer Lopez, who broke through internationally by playing the title role in Selena (1997).
