Ruth Joan Bader Ginsburg is an 84-year-old American lawyer and one of the nine justices of the United States Supreme Court, the nation's highest judicial body. In 1980, Ginsburg was appointed judge of the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington DC by President Jimmy Carter, where she served until Bill Clinton nominated her as a judge of the federal Supreme Court in 1993.
