One week a year, around Ashura, all Iranians stay outside the home. Women ignore the local curfew. Men cry. Communities come together to mourn the death of their saint, ask for wishes to come true, and give thanks for prayers that have been answered. While this week showcases Iran's most restrictive religious elements, it also provides space for intimate community bonds. The question arises whether this space in the experience of love in the broadest sense is also unavoidably political in nature, because it affects all individuals and thus their view of the world...
