In Portrait of Jason, the African-American gay prostitute Jason talks candidly about his life. During the conversation he seems to become more and more emotional and loose.

Both Jason and filmmaker Shirley Clarke come from the circles surrounding Andy Warhol. Now those circles around him were quite large. Jason is primarily a theatrical person who would prefer to be on Broadway (but does not show sufficient talent for this), but meanwhile had a tough childhood, mainly lives on the fringes of society and scrapes his money together through prostitution and the many of the events while laughing. He is black and gay and between the lines both are self-hatred.
The film, like everything from Warhol circles, is very rudimentary. Sometimes blurry images and a portable camera aimed at the main character. And Jason occasionally enjoys the attention he's always wanted.
It also gnaws. Jason seems to be getting more or less drunk (and is also stoned, by the way) and when Jason is almost on the floor and sees close to his emotion, they confront him with things that were not nice that he has done in the past and the fact that he largely plays a role and may have buried himself so deeply that his true self may be lost forever. Who is Jason anyway? And society (from 1968) forces Jason to lose himself in this way. In the end it goes to offend Jason. In doing so, they hurt him (and may even abuse him), but it does show more of Jason.
Thoughtful, but also fascinating. And by coincidence it was 54 years ago today on the day that this was filmed.
