Shocking film about repression in a totalitarian state, in this case Poland during the time of Stalin in the early 1950s. The reverse Stockholm Syndrome in the final part of the film is surprising, but, whether intentionally or unintentionally, it somewhat detracts from the macabre atmosphere of the rest of the film. I struggle to come to terms with that twist.

Krystyna Janda's nuanced performance is of exceptional class, almost unsurpassed in my opinion. In every respect, an intense, haunting film.

An impressive film about a horrific reality of fanaticism leading to physical and, above all, psychological torture.

A film that keeps you in its grip, although I find, as written previously, that the developments at the end of the film do not match the gripping scenes of interrogation and torture that precede them.

Nevertheless, this film about yet another aftermath of World War II and the tensions between East and West is very powerful.

A very strong point of the film is, of course, the acting, with lead actress Krystyna Janda deserving nothing but praise for her versatile and impressive performance.

The film was made, like many Czechoslovak films from the 1960s for example, during a brief period when censorship was looser in Poland (early 1980s), but that period was very short, because the army intervened due to the social unrest at the time. General Jaruzelski became the most powerful man in the country and declared a state of emergency. The political winds shifted completely again, and this film, which had just been completed, was banned. Eventually, it was possible to protect the film from destruction, and it was released seven years later, at a time when the communist regimes were collapsing.

The film is about the psychological torture of someone who has no idea why she was arrested. Apart from a brief atmospheric sketch at the beginning of the film and the end, the film takes place entirely in prison, where they are working to break her and extract confessions. This happens in various ways. She is severely abused and raped. It is done through gaslighting, intimidation, being friendly, and manipulating those around her and fellow inmates. The fact that the film keeps such a strong focus on this is the strength of this harsh film. The film does not let you escape.
