His eyes are affected by cataracts, so Philippe Koudjina no longer takes pictures. He was recently hit by a car, so he walks on crutches. His nickname was The Cheese, because he always asked people to smile. A mountain of cameras in his living room recalls his past as a photographer, in the years after Niger's independence, when the African continent looked optimistically ahead and enjoyed table football and the twist. The negatives are now crumbling. Yet Koudjina is not a disillusioned man. He takes life as it comes. The express mail delivers him a package of photos of his hand, which he patiently signs. Because that is what the western art world values. African colleagues such as Seydou Keïta and Malick Sidibé earn a lot of money with their work, which makes a good impression in museums and galleries from Paris to New York. Two admirers try to bring Koudjina to the attention of a wealthy collector, but for now the old photographer will remain on the mend.
