It is not at all surprising that this documentary is doing so well abroad. A typical Dutch phenomenon, also wonderfully enhanced with many shots of the red light district accompanied by organ music, so that even I (I walk past it every day (on the way to school that is)) start to romanticize Amsterdam. And then we also have a nice story. ; wrong choices, street people and a wonderfully down-to-earth approach to problems. Many fascinating anecdotes and the film also manages to capture the daily routine very well. Add to that a number of cinematic, emotionally charged scenes such as the exhibition in which a local police officer dances with a whore while "On those Amsterdam Canals" blare across the dance floor and a snow fight between the two sisters and you can easily call Ouwehoeren a beautiful documentary.

Very funny story about whores indeed.

And this time no young ladies from the Eastern Bloc but real Amsterdam prostitutes well into their 70s. Yes, you won't go there as a young man, unless you are gerontophilic. Anyway, without kidding: this was a very fascinating and catchy project and I actually have quite a bit of respect for those women who have been able to endure it for 50 years behind the windows and who also continue to live their lives together happily and like old coffee-drinking women. to go. Their sense of humor was very strong and they certainly did not mince their words. It also shows that prostitution is more than just fucking for money, but of course we all knew that. This film is not just about a story behind the windows, there is of course also an extensive look into the private lives of the Fokkens sisters, and in itself I didn't think it was that bad. The two sisters give a shit about everything and just do their thing. The look into the past (during that part with Martine and her daughter) is also very strong and that is also where the whole drama started. Yes, ending up in prostitution is certainly the last thing a woman wants. But the Fokkens sisters are fine with it this way and are already used to it. Whether that is a good sign or a matter of manipulation is still the question at that moment. While you actually know the answer.

For the rest, this was another very good and educational Dutch documentary. Something different again.

Nice but somewhat non-binding documentary about the twin sisters Louise and Martine Fokkens, who have been well-known faces on the Amsterdam red light district for over 50 years. The ladies have plenty to talk about and have endless funny anecdotes, but I would have liked to know more about their rather tragic past. Unfortunately, due to the relatively short playing time, there is little room for this.
