Off the Menu: Asian America plot
"We Are What We Eat"
In this documentary, the filmmaker explores the importance of food as part of the culture and identity of Asians in America. How food preserves traditions, celebrates faith and strengthens family ties. For example, the "sushi king of Texas" combines Asian ingredients with his ingenuity to run a successful restaurant, while Chinese chefs Jonathan Wu and Wilson Tang make culinary history in New York with their modern restaurant Fung Tu. At the Sikh temple at Oak Creek, Wisconsin, food is used as a cure after a horrific shooting incident. And in Hawaii, Hi'ile Kawelo uses techniques from her ancestors to revive an 800-year-old historic fishing pond to help the Hawaiian community become completely self-sufficient.
