Nippon no Misemono plot
Misemono, which literally means 'things to display', was one of the most popular and inexpensive forms of entertainment in Japan during the Edo period (1603-1868), although the earliest versions go back much further, to the Muromachi era. period (1336-1573). The Misemono was basically a traveling circus made up of countless, almost always vulgar curiosities, ranging from wild animals and acrobats to a freak show. Director Yoichiro Okutani follows the only remaining Misemono in Japan with his camera. A rich and especially interesting portrait of a tradition that is threatened with extinction.
