Nattens Häxor plot
It is a footnote in history, but at the same time a fascinating story about female war heroism. The pilots as well as the navigators and mechanics of the 588th regiment were women. Some had never seen an aircraft up close when they enlisted in the regiment. They flew in old-fashioned wooden and canvas training gear. When hit, it was fatal: they burned like matchboxes and the crew had no parachutes to reduce weight and load heavier bombs. But they were not hit – hence their nickname – because they actually flew too slow for the German Messerschmitts and during the bombardment they often hovered towards their target with the engines switched off. The Night Witches were active from 1942 to 1945, from the Russian front to the gates of Berlin. They often flew ten to fifteen missions a night. Many female pilots flew more than a thousand flights. The Night Witches were the most decorated regiment of the Russian Air Force. The documentary lets surviving Night Witches tell their own story, richly illustrated with unique archive footage.
