Los Jóvenes Muertos plot
More than thirty young people committed suicide between 1997 and 2007 in the remote Argentine town of Las Heras, about 1500 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. That is a lot for a population of only 18,000 people. Enough in any case to stand out. When the town was founded it was literally a terminus: the last station and turning point for the train service. Now it seems to have become a figurative end point. In his “Dead Youth”, director Leandro Listorti lists the names of the young people who took their own lives one by one, and then tries to capture the void they left behind in images. Images of empty chairs in school classrooms, abandoned factory halls, empty streets. Images where life is never far away: a dog barks, a truck pulls up...
