Lacan Palestine plot
The term essay film is sometimes used a little lightly, but this is one - and not an easy one. Skillfully cut and pasted from existing film material, the film presents a complex picture of Palestine. The land that is not a land, but has inhabitants. An unlikely place for falling in love. The director wonders, from his adopted background, when you become someone, and how a society can arise from individuals; he compares the functioning of a complex society with that of John Coltrane's jazz combo, in which five superegos nevertheless come to harmony. In Mike Hoolboom's vision of Palestine, love and violence naturally coexist.
