In Kabul, Between Prayers, filmmaker Aboozar Amini portrays the life of young Taliban soldier Samim—a man who oscillates between conviction and doubt. With a sense of nuance and humanity, Amini shows how Samim navigates faith, duty, and personal desires in contemporary Kabul.

The Taliban is highly adept at propaganda, and that's at least partly evident in this supposed documentary about two brothers in Kabul. Sanim is 24, mans a checkpoint, dutifully prays five times a day that he may become a martyr and that Allah will destroy the infidels, and behaves (despite his heavy weaponry) like a friendly social worker on the street. We also see him, along with a motorcycle gang of Taliban fighters, widely holding up traffic with their motorbikes. Considerably more authentic (and therefore much more interesting) is the portrait of 14-year-old Regi, who can effortlessly quote a long passage from the Quran, but has no idea what it means. We see him grow from an innocent, budding teenager into a still-likable young man with a zeal for war. Beautifully filmed, but with a heavy propaganda sauce and therefore to be taken with a grain of salt.
