The Taliban is highly adept at propaganda, and that's at least partly evident in this supposed documentary about two brothers in Kabul. Sanim is 24, mans a checkpoint, dutifully prays five times a day that he may become a martyr and that Allah will destroy the infidels, and behaves (despite his heavy weaponry) like a friendly social worker on the street. We also see him, along with a motorcycle gang of Taliban fighters, widely holding up traffic with their motorbikes. Considerably more authentic (and therefore much more interesting) is the portrait of 14-year-old Regi, who can effortlessly quote a long passage from the Quran, but has no idea what it means. We see him grow from an innocent, budding teenager into a still-likable young man with a zeal for war. Beautifully filmed, but with a heavy propaganda sauce and therefore to be taken with a grain of salt.

This is the kind of documentary you knew the NPO—which has managed for nearly three years now to broadcast a genuine Hamas news bulletin every day at 8:00 PM as if the Netherlands were in Gaza—was going to air, because they miss no opportunity or taxpayer cent to—in express disdain for populist right-wing politics—drill into the Dutch people that Muslims are ordinary people, and even that Muslim terrorists are actually very nice people. Anyway, the documentary is a sort of slice-of-life of a Taliban family in Afghanistan, where the tough Taliban fighter dutifully dreams and prays to die as a martyr in the holy war against infidels, but meanwhile has to deal with daily life, including marital problems and his job as a traffic controller, and who is actually a very ordinary guy trying to do good for his community. His younger brother is already completely indoctrinated and can't wait to go fight in the war like in Palestine (that must have pleased the NPO). Even so, the documentary is quite entertaining: you get the impression of being introduced to real life in Afghanistan, an intriguing, exotic country where you can imagine that hippies liked going there before radical Islam took hold of the region (although the NPO naturally considers that last point a racist remark).

As a documentary, this is very weak. There is no story, and it all moves agonizingly slowly. A five-minute story is stretched over 102 minutes. A documentary that follows three brothers in Afghanistan: one older and two much younger brothers. In itself, it is probably an intimate portrait of Afghanistan and the people there. That is the only positive thing I have to say about the film. There are also frequent beautiful shots of the dry landscape. But otherwise, it is not a film that makes you very cheerful. What a terrible country and what terrible people. Everything revolves around religion there. Everyone is completely brainwashed. And it is a very aggressive form of religion, too. The most important thing is that the unbeliever is killed. That is how their Allah sees it. And in their eyes, anyone is an unbeliever very quickly. As soon as you do not adhere to their strict requirements of the Quran, you quickly meet the criteria. A country like this actually offers little hope that things will ever get better. And that is quite frightening.
