Irish Cinema: Ourselves Alone? plot

Gabriel Byrne is the host who portrays his native country as a country where foreign filmmakers liked to film, but which had hardly any film tradition of its own. For example, he shows the oldest film fragment shot in Ireland, the passage over the O'Connel Bridge in 1897, filmed by the French Lumière brothers. There are many excerpts from Irish cinema and films shot in Ireland by foreign producers. In the 1980s, a new generation of Irish filmmakers emerged; they provided the homegrown film. With Oscar winners such as Daniel Day Lewis, Brenda Fricker and Neil Jordan, national Irish film production is beginning to pay off internationally.
