Highway Courtesans plot
At the beginning of the documentary, a fragment is shown of an elegantly dancing woman. Subtitles explain that hundreds of years ago, poor village girls became popular as courtesans in the palaces of Central India, to earn money for their families. It became a family tradition for centuries - the descendants of these courtesans are called Bachara and live in several hundred villages. Director Mystelle Brabbee followed one of them, the 17-year-old Guddi at the start of the documentary. Guddi becomes more confident and outspoken as the documentary progresses. She falls in love, but does not get permission from her family. And she starts working as a teacher at the village school and thus manages - for the time being - to avoid her fate.
