Europe in 8 Bits plot
In the 1990s, everyone played Donkey Kong and Super Mario on their Gameboys. Just under two decades later, a number of creatives pulled the devices out from under a layer of dust and transformed them into musical instruments. And now they DJ in small clubs in front of enthusiastic crowds with their old game console as a turntable. The 8-bit tones are reminiscent of the eighties, but have been repackaged into something radically new. In the infectious documentary, the quotes from the stars of 'chip music' follow each other in rapid succession. Together they tell the story of the rise and significance of chip music from the inside. It cannot be reduced to a nostalgic longing for adolescence. It is also a form of rebellion: against the idea that new and more complex technology makes life better. It is precisely from the limitation of the 8 bits that creativity can be pushed to great heights.
