Desert Riders plot
Gruesome accidents, malnutrition, sleep deprivation, rape, growth suppression injections; the stories of young jockey veterans Rafiq, Nasir, Ronnie, Amirul, Lokmon, Mobarak and Hasan are horrifying. “Desert Riders” provides a disconcerting look behind the scenes of camel racing in the wealthy United Arab Emirates, which grew from a local to an international event in the 1980s. A need for lightweight jockeys led to the illegal importation of very young children from poor countries like Sudan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, and to a form of modern slavery. The documentary exposes the origins and prohibitions of the use of child jockeys through interviews with children who worked as jockeys, local and international children's rights activists, a British photographer, parents, child smugglers and camel farm owners.
