De Winnaars plot
The Reine Elisabeth music competition is held annually in Brussels, where young musicians compete fiercely with each other. The winner seems to have a golden future, but does that expectation always come true? In this documentary, four winners of the competition talk about their experiences. Russian pianist Yevgeny Moguilevsky won in 1964, but his career was thwarted by the Russian authorities because of his alleged 'political unreliability'. The violinist Bert Senofsky, who won the competition in 1955, talks about the enormous effort required to become a top musician. The violinist Philippe Hirschhorn won in 1967, but was later diagnosed with a serious illness, which now makes him look at his career with different eyes. The violinist Mikhail Bezverkhny, winner in 1976, is still on the musical front line, but can hardly practice at home due to a neighbor quarrel. De Winners shows that behind the glamor of the Reine Elisabeth competition, there is a world of hard work and a lot of frustration, which does not exclude the genuine love of music from the participants.
