De Vergeten Krijgers plot
'The Forgotten Warriors' sheds light on the unknown history of the Indo-African soldiers who fought for 'Queen, people and fatherland' in the colony of the Dutch East Indies. The documentary follows the 94-year-old Daniël Cordus, a grandson of the African KNIL soldier Cordus. Under this Dutch surname, ancestor Cordus was registered in 1837 for the KNIL in Elmina Castle, Ghana. One hundred years later, during the Second World War, the only 19-year-old Daniël Cordus and his two brothers are put to work as prisoners of war on the infamous Burma Railway by the Japanese occupier. Since his forced arrival in the Netherlands, Daniël has been fighting for the rehabilitation of all Indo-Africans who died before the Dutch flag. Seventy years after his captivity, he returns to Burma for the first time to say goodbye to his brother Jan, who rests on the plot in Thanbyuzayat.
