Concerto: A Beethoven Journey plot
For the past four years, Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes has devoted himself entirely to Beethoven, whom he considers the greatest composer of all time. By concentrating on one composer, he can dig deeper, with the ultimate goal of better understanding his music. In those four years, Andsnes recorded the five piano concertos with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra – he conducts from the piano – after which a world tour followed. Andsnes also played Beethoven's chamber music, from the Kreutzer Sonata to the Piano Sonatas. But the emphasis is on the piano concertos, which Andsnes describes as “magical pieces.” In this documentary by Phil Grabsky, Andsnes talks enthusiastically and with great expertise about the concerts – from the vital and virtuoso youth works to the epic, highly original last three.
