Coma plot
Documentary about four people who have awakened from a coma. Along with their families and medical attendants, Roxy, Tom, Sean and Al Khan are followed for a year at the head injury center of the reputed JFK Medical Center in Edison, New Jersey. There they are cared for by a team of doctors and neuropsychologists led by Dr. Joseph Giacino and Dr. Caroline McCagg. Two of the patients make slow progress and embark on a long and difficult rehabilitation process. The other two remain floating in an inaccessible and mysterious 'vegetative' state. The documentary also examines what exactly coma is, how often it occurs, what the possibilities are for awakening from it and how likely patients are to recover. At the same time, the difficult existential question is also considered when a life is worth living and when it is not, and who is allowed to decide.
