Citizen Jane: Battle for the City plot
American-Canadian publicist and activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) started her career as a journalist and grew into an influential activist in the 1950s and 1960s with quite controversial ideas about urban development and urban planning at the time. She saw that the so-called urban renewal was destroying more than it was building and mobilized local residents to protest against expropriation. In her book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, she writes that the city derives its vitality and the well-being and safety of its residents mainly from the diversity of people and activities in the streets.
