Jane plot

"It took a woman to unlock the secret of early man"

Secretary Jane Goodall sees her dream come true when she gets the chance to do a long-term study of chimpanzees in Gombe National Park in Tanzania. She makes up for her lack of experience and scientific knowledge with an open mind, angelic patience and above all a passion for the animals. Her revolutionary research, in which she received enormous help from cameraman Hugo van Lewick, provided new insights into the relationship between chimpanzees and humans. In this documentary, Jane uses Van Lewick's film footage to look back on her early years in Gombe.

Jane Goodall is one of the foremost authorities on anthropology. She was the first human to base scientific research on chimpanzees on her own experience, befriending them.

In a time of Blue Planet and Earth, it is surprising to see how impressive the images of her cameraman (and later husband) Hugo van Lawick still are some 60 years later. The film shows us key moments from Jane's years, but we see magical, heartwarming and gruesome images that you don't get in an Attenborough production. This documentary is not special in terms of form, but the images and the fascinating commentary by Goodall himself make this a very successful documentary.

From the interview series 'Of the beauty and the comfort' (2000), the session with Jane Goodall was one of the strongest as far as I'm concerned, so I was looking forward to this.

But that was disappointing.

Images of Gombe that hardly exceed the level of holiday films in terms of expressiveness. The heroine posing repeatedly while peering through binoculars, and, for reasons unknown to me, lots and lots of close ups of insects. Beautiful fragments of Van Lawick's work in the Serengeti, but without context, at most provoking the reaction 'Gosh, shall we go there this year, dear?'

The information about Goodall's work remains very superficial, and her private life, which is widely covered, is not exactly exciting. Or not interestingly presented, anyway.

The interview doesn't help either. Voice-over Jane: 'It was very frustrating, those first few months, that I couldn't make contact with the chimpanzees'. Immediately afterwards the interviewer: 'How frustrating was it that you couldn't make contact with the chimpanzees during those first months?'

Extra penalty points for the music that can hardly be tolerated, much too present. What on earth does that mean?

It's quite fascinating how Goodall, as a non-scientist, got the chance to chase her dreams among the chimpanzees in Africa. In passing, she also gets to know her Dutch husband there, who provides the beautiful camera images. A jungle romance at its best. There is not really much (biological) depth to be seen, but that is not a bad thing.
