Carte Blanche plot
When François Bozizé staged a coup d'état in the Central African Republic in 2002, Jean-Pierre Bemba established himself as the leader of militant rebels from neighboring Congo. He gave his rebel army (MLC) 'carte blanche' to kill, rape and loot at will. The successful Congolese businessman and senator is one of the first army commanders on trial for his alleged responsibility for the systematic rape of civilians by his soldiers. In his cell in The Hague he manufactures clay cups and dishes for his family, who await his business in a luxurious Belgian residence. For the African victims, Bemba's arrest brings renewed hope that justice will prevail. For this project, the filmmakers of Carte Blanche were given unique access from the Criminal Court to the investigation into Bemba.
