Cape Town Soup plot
Personal outpourings, modern dance, drums and free jazz sounds come together in this experimentally designed portrait of Cape Town and four of its inhabitants. It's not just about everyday life in colorful South Africa, but also about the importance of style and fashion, about losing yourself, speaking the right language and escaping the grind of work and love. The interviewees (four black women and a white man) sit relaxed on the roof, on the fridge, under the hair dryer or with a cup of coffee on a rock. The dancers also contribute to the unusual and often witty stylization that gives the city the allure of a contemporary theater set. Cape Town Soup stays far from the standard formulas of the problem film. The three filmmakers stayed in Cape Town for two months and collaborated with local artists. Internationally renowned dancer Mamela Nyamza and writer and dancer John Cartwright (also one of the interviewees) contributed to the choreography.
