Biùtiful Cauntri plot
The Campania region of Italy has no fewer than 1,200 illegal dumps containing toxic waste. The makers asked themselves the question: 'How is this possible in the Italy - and therefore also Europe - of 2007?' and went to investigate. Landfilling is big business and the Camorra, the local mafia, makes good money from it. Local administrators and businessmen are also taking advantage and looking the other way. Pieces of asbestos next to a potato field? Nobody cleans it up. Burning tires in the field? The fire brigade stays away. Every month, three hectares of agricultural land disappear under the dirt. Also right next to the nature reserves where the water buffalo graze, the most dangerous substances are open and exposed along the road. There is hardly any control, but there are victims. Sheep farmers watch their livestock die from dioxin poisoning. And people unknowingly eat poisoned crops. 'We all die in silence here,' says the independent environmental inspector Raffaele. He passionately discusses, investigates and rants to save what can be saved.
