Bienvenue à Madagascar plot
When returning to a place from the past, it always seems smaller or larger, more oppressive, freer or duller than before. Time distorts the memory. But according to Franssou Prenant, everything in Algiers is still the same, except perhaps the color of the fence, which has faded from blue to gray because there is no more paint. Her image of the city where she lived for a few years as an ambassador's wife soon turns out to be far from unambiguous. Her memories, retrieved in voice-over, are also mixed with those of others. Twenty voices - different accents, pitches, ages - tell about the struggle for independence, the relationship between population groups, and the rise of Islam.
