At My Doorstep plot
Nishta Jain looks at the downside of Mumbai's economic boom by interviewing the illegal workers in and around her apartment building, from security guards and laundry collectors to garbage collectors and construction workers. For them, the big city has no Bollywood dreams in store. More than 70% of the male workforce in Mumbai is in the twilight zone of low-paid, unprotected and black labour. Masculine, because in India it is the norm for the man to support his family. An additional consequence is that the identity of these men is in crisis; they feel they have failed in their role. Through the conversations with these men, Jain makes an almost feminist plea for them. She also tries to respect them: she has the night watchman Dayanand tell her how to portray him.
