Araya plot
Araya is an old salt mine on the peninsula northeast of Venezuela, still in operation in 1959, five hundred years after its Spanish discovery. Director Benacerraf gives a picture of the workers in the mine, the 'Salineros', and their age-old methods of extracting the salt. Eventually, one by one, they make way for the new industrial exploitation.
