Alentejo, Alentejo plot
This film is a journey into the warm Alentejo countryside (the southern region of Portugal) that sheds light on Cante's music and the lives of her performers. Not many people outside of Portugal know about these a cappella polyphonic choirs, typically formed by 20 to 30 male farmers or miners, which give the impression of expressing the deep voice of the earth. With the international recognition of Cante by UNESCO (2014), the conflict between tradition and modernity is still very great. What does this regional musical tradition mean today and for whom? Is it still possible for a regional expression to survive under the pressure of mass cultural globalization? Have the new generations found a sense of togetherness in this culture? Can some modern versions of Cante be accepted by the representatives of the original tradition? All these questions are answered in this documentary.
