A Summer in the Cage plot
Filmmaker Ben Selkow captured his friend Sam's struggle with bipolar disorder (formerly known as "manic-depressive disorder") on film for seven years. Sam experiences manic delusions, struggles through crippling depression and tries to evade his father's legacy (he too was bipolar and killed himself when Sam was eight). It also outlines the deep emotional impact of Sam's condition on his family and environment, giving a human face to a disease that affects millions of American families. However, the story unfolds in a dramatic way, also questioning the friendship between Sam and Ben, as well as the ethical responsibilities of a documentary filmmaker.
