"The thrilling tale of a master swindler and his struggle to go straight when he fell in love."
Dan Corvan and Larry Maddox, backed by fake promoter Wade, visit Fairfield to sell worthless stock to town miser Godfred Queritt. Corvan's friendly personality impresses the townsfolk and the beautiful Margaret Leland. Queritt buys the shares. Wade arrives and argues with Corvan. An old lady who lives in the workhouse sends for Corvan and entrusts him with the money stolen by her son, which she wants to hand over to the owner. This makes Corvan decide to walk the right path.
