Sonatine plot

"A ferocious man sleeps here."

Sonatina is set in the world of Yakuza, the Japanese underworld. Here, Murakawa (Takeshi Kitano) has a reputation for being one of Tokyo's toughest and most violent mobsters. He wants to say goodbye appropriately with one last honorable assignment. When a gangster war ignites in Okinawa, he sees his chance. Urged on by his boss, he travels there with some of his gang members to put things in order. Because of his arrival, the flame is only right in the pan. Murakawa suffers heavy losses and is forced to retire to a remote villa. There, time is killed with seemingly harmless games and Murakawa sees his group disintegrate.

Kitano's "Sonatina" turned out to be a real surprise.

3rd viewing and this time it was hit, the full blow. Warm atmospheric film with beautiful framing and good (gripping) music.

Had to think a few times of Alain Delon who once during a screening of a Kitano film kept repeating that that man can't act . There is some truth in it, but Kitano has an extremely strong presence and I can watch the man for hours.

Unconventional crime film with a very strange tone but powerfully portrayed. Well, if I'm honest, no, Kitano can't act. Easy to create a numb character, you don't need acting talent for that. Fortunately, as a director he makes much more of it and plays on contrasts between the exuberance of life and the irrevocability of death, which stops everything in one moment. The apparent imbalance between hard crime and almost childish comedy is silvered when death returns "in full force" in the form of a fisherman . Confronting moment.

The images on this beach were beautiful and the new age-like music has a clear added value. Gangster Murakawa is a doomed character pursued by death, and the ending is the only logical outcome of this film. The execution with that crane happened to remind me of Consequences of Love (3.5*) that I saw recently. Solid, but not memorable for me.

Quirky Kitano again. Those Japanese mafia films don't fascinate me and that is no different for this film. Yet the approach is completely different from what you usually get. Substantively quite a standard treaty about rival gangs, betrayal and revenge.

Only the plot is quite special. The middle part and actually the emphasis of the film is on the humor. Sometimes that humor is accompanied by cruelty. The scene with the crane above the water was incredibly dry - well, after all. That humor continues later when the gang members come up with some absurd games out of boredom.

The approach alone makes it interesting. The action and settlements were spent less on me. Didn't like it much, a bit fake too. For the rest, entertaining enough to keep me busy for an hour and a half.
