“Nobody commits a murder just for the experiment of committing it. Nobody except us.”

Exciting Hitchcock film shot in one location. This provides enough suspense, and Hitchcock knows how to keep the viewer in its grip with an ingenious structure and exciting conclusion. Rope shows that you don't need a lot of resources to deliver a chilling film.

An inventive story (the corpse that just lays out in the living room all the time while a party is going on is genius) and strong actors who take the material to a higher level. Dall, Stewart and Granger are on a roll. Also note some of the brilliant camera angles that Hitch takes. Very original and Hitchcock shows that he was way ahead of his time. Another gem from the Master of Suspense.

Rope not only remains impressive in all those years after release, even after watching 4x, new things continue to stand out, which is great for a film that saw the light of day just after the 2nd world war!

The dialogues are razor sharp and certainly for that time! And the way of filming and directing was completely innovative for its time! Lovely color too by the way. A Hitchcock piece that I have forgotten, which deserves at least as much attention than Psycho or The Birds for example! :O

previously I gave a 5, then a 4.5.. now just back to 5 and (maybe?) a top 10 place.

And again to the Hitchcock with this unknown title.

They don't let grass grow on it and as a viewer you actually fall into the moment of the murder and especially the aftermath. Interesting at first is the difference in reaction between Phillip and Brandon, one full of doubt and fear of being caught, the other full of themselves and their act, and able to raise the stakes of the game. A kind of friction is immediately noticeable between the two gentlemen, which is clearly going to cause a lot of tension.

However, the film finds its strongest phase when the guests pour in and especially when Rupert Cadell arrives. This gentleman immediately puts his finger on the sore spot a number of times, without knowing what is going on, after which he becomes suspicious. The joust that follows is extremely fascinating and is received differently by the perpetrators. Phillip feels increasingly cornered, but the arrogant and narcissistic Brandon still sees it as a game and adds fuel to the fire where he can. Fascinating is the discussion at some point about being allowed to kill stupid people, something known today as a 'purge'. Weird is the mistake where the wound on Phillip's hand has disappeared.

Compared to Vertigo and Psycho, Rope is certainly not Hitchcock's best, a compliment for the innovative camera and editing work that is nowadays called the 'one shot' style, can certainly be missed and perhaps Hitchcock was the first to ever use this. Then the dialogues especially around Rupert Cadell can be called sharp and James Stewart can also expect a compliment that for once strikes a different sound than the hollow peasant gnaw that otherwise gives. Then John Dall should be mentioned as the self-righteous self-centered Brandon. As said, there is better work by Hitchcock, but Rope is certainly a solid and strong film.
