Very disappointing Ritchie.

I should have predicted it. Once the (British) humor is gone, there isn't much left in such a film. The weighty seriousness with which Ritchie tells his story does the film absolutely no good, but what makes it even worse are the futile attempts at depth. Cobbler, stick to your last.

As mentioned, the humor has been completely removed, the characters themselves have also undergone a serious downgrade compared to films such as Snatch and Lock, Stock. Statham is still strong, but the rest of the actors can barely keep up with him. Liotta in particular stands out. Strange choice for him.

What makes it even more bearable is the fact that Ritchie's visual style (as almost always) looks more than polished. Unfortunately, the visuals alone couldn't hold my attention enough, so I have to conclude that Ritchie leaves me disappointed for the first time. 2.0*, which are mainly there for the visuals and editing.

Ritchie: So it's cool, visually appealing, has a cool soundtrack and editing to enjoy (don't miss the humor though). But it feels like he's overplaying his hand a bit thematically in this movie. Nothing wrong with a dark side, vagueness and messed up things. But gradually I lose it and it seems pretentious rather than layered. Or it's too ambitious for me. But Ritchie's style alone is enough for a pass. The 'twist' that the duo were his prison neighbors wasn't all that surprising.
Nice role by Liotta and Statham gives his 'usual character' a somewhat icy twist.

Revolver is a film with an interesting plot, good actors who shine and a wonderful atmosphere. Great movie but don't make it bigger than what it is.
