"The city shines brightest at night"
Los Angeles. Lou Bloom (Gyllenhaal) is a driven young man desperate for a job. He discovers the fast-paced world of crime reporting in the American metropolis and soon finds himself among the die-hard freelance journalists who film car accidents, fires, murders and other chaotic situations for the many news stations in the city. As a nightcrawler, someone who constantly watches the police radio and hopes for victims, Lou does everything he can to make a quick buck. His material resonates with TV veteran Nina (Russo), but as he searches for news, the line between spectator and participant blurs and Lou quickly becomes the star of his own story.

The lies roll out of the mouth of this self-proclaimed director/founder of VideoNews so easily that you can clearly see the differences between the commercial and independent news in the USA.
Fortunately this is not the case here in the Netherlands, but in the USA this seems to be the normal course of action. Manipulation and sensationalism also play an important role in news gathering and you are happy that you can get your news in the Netherlands from reliable channels. And I suspect that the Journaal on Ned.1 and RTL4 are.
This film is really the cream of the crop, showing how they could make the news here too.

Intriguing!
Strong story about sensationalism versus the lack of your own conscience/moral actions, the film occasionally goes quite far in the sense that it is able to convey the nastyness of a situation well. Gyllenhaal portrays a genius character who goes far beyond boundaries to keep stroking his own ego. The climax is when he goes to report in that mansion at the risk of his own life, just to score a scoop.
Yes, a worthy successor to Natural Born Killers! 4*

What a smart guy. Excellent acting by Gyllenhaal. The DOP (Robert Elswit, known for his work with PT Anderson) also helps by highlighting Jake's eyes very special. Louis Bloom seems to refer to the protagonist of James Joyces Ulysses. Some of the dialogues are very strong, at other times it's a bit about it (like the death scene of his sidekick). So I didn't really think it was a top film, but I think Nightcrawler is an original print with a few good assets.
