My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done plot

"The Mystery Isn't Who. But Why."

Amateur actor Brad (Michael Shannon) stars in a play about Oedipus. He gets a little too absorbed in his character, sees things that aren't there and threatens to kill his real mother. Brad locks up with two special hostages. While Officer Havenhurst (Willem Dafoe) negotiates from a safe distance with the seemingly life-threatening Brad, flashbacks show how things got to this point.

Either I wasn't paying attention or this collaboration between Werner Herzog (director) and David Lynch (producer) didn't really cause a huge sensation.

Well luckily I ran into it anyway because it is a very nice hostage drama that is played out in a Lynch-like way, although we recognize the Herzorg method again in Peru and Mexico.

Fine actor Willem Dafoe as the detective called in on the murder, Udo Kier plays just about the most normal person in the entire film and quite a great lead role from Michael Shannon.

We also get flamingos and ostriches in this small but beautiful project by two masters of cinema.

Many scenes are a bit of a failure, most of them brilliant and above all extremely funny.

4.5*
