Jeder für Sich und Gott gegen Alle plot

This film by Herzog is based on the true and mysterious story of Kasper Hauser, a young man who suddenly appears in Nuremberg in 1828, barely able to speak or walk and carrying a strange letter. He later stated that for as long as he could remember he had been imprisoned in some basement from which he had just been released, for no reason given. A benefactor tries to integrate him into society, which produces intriguing results.

In addition to the intriguing figure of Kasper Hauser, Herzog also pays attention to beautiful imagery in his film, which is mainly characterized by the meticulous drawing of the figures surrounding the main character.

The story is not new in the sense that I have already seen a few films with that theme, so that the novelty has worn off a bit and it is less interesting.

Blessed is the man who knows nothing...

I don't understand why Herzog chose a thirty-something to play Kaspar Hauser, who was a 15-16 year old when he was found. Werner Herzog's ways are inscrutable, as it turns out again. An intriguing film about a history mystery. Herzog doesn't elaborate much on Hauser's parentage and the more than mysterious murder of him; he is more fascinated by the mind and imagination of a boy who has lived like an animal since birth and really has to learn everything. I thought Bruno S made a great transformation from rude and retarded to sensitivity to the world around him. His learning process is shown with funny and disturbing examples. I had already read articles about Hauser and his life remains an incredible story.

I couldn't do much with this. Some scenes are amusing – the film sometimes seems to want to be a comedy – but the humor tends towards the bland and droll, such as the way Kaspar recites his German lyrics. In general, the film is a bit boring and it just ripples on – we mainly look at Kaspar's progression from wolf child to reasonably integrated German citizen – and I have not been able to discover much content. Kaspar's story, in which a blind person actually sees better than the people around them, will apply to itself: as a wolf child, he is a more authentic and in that sense a better developed person than the cultured people around him. But we don't see Kaspar doing anything special and he mainly indicates that he is unhappy that they have taken him away from the dungeon. That fits the romantic era when people turned away from civilization and glorified the authentic nature (man) - the story on which the film is based takes place in 1824 at the time of the Romantic period when people were obsessed with such wolf children. (and the riddle that goes with it) – but Herzog's film adaptation is not very convincing and therefore not very interesting.
