Hoodlum plot

"Power is measured in enemies."

Harlem, 1934. The Great Depression. The 'Queen' earns her money from betting and lotteries. When white mobster Dutch Schultz sees how much money can be made with this, he tries to take over her business. Bumpy Johnson puts a stop to this, first as a bodyguard, later as her closest confidant. When the "Queen" goes to jail, Bumpy takes over. His reign gains Robin Hood-like fame when he lets some of the money he earns flow back into the pockets of the poor black population. He soon finds Dutch Schultz on his way again. While the blood flows more and more freely between the two gangsters, Lucky Luciano tries to bring the parties together. However, a deadly and violent gang war seems unavoidable.

It is a pity that the film went unnoticed, because it is clearly a film with attention and respect for historical fidelity. This comes to the fore in various scenes: in the character of Madame Queen, in the portrayal of Luciano, in the murder of Schultz, and in the involvement of Dewey. The film goes quite a bit further than the average gangster movie. This makes "Hoodlum" an authentic film, more so than the overhyped "The Untouchables," but still less so than the brilliant character study of Scorsese's "Goodfellas." With strong performances from Tim Roth and Andy Garcia, but a very average performance from Fishburne.

A good film about a gang war over who controls the bets and lotteries. The plot and characters hold few surprises. However, this is still an old-fashioned and solid gangster film set in Harlem during the Great Depression. Entertaining, and a cast with many well-known names, none of whom disappoint.
