Family Business plot

"There's nothing like a good robbery to bring a family together."

Jessie (Sean Connery), Vito (Dustin Hoffman) and Adam (Matthew Broderick) are grandfather, father and son who jointly plot a burglary. The (exciting) job doesn't really matter that much. It is about the sometimes difficult relationship between the three generations of sympathetic criminals.

Lumet is far from the best director and here too he turns a nice angle and good actors into a fairly boring and mainstream film with more to it. Certainly because the film wants to go in a direction to emphasize the family ties and the characters instead of the robberies themselves, you expect much more content. And that is hard to find. The result is a film that is not bad, but is just extremely boring to watch. This could have been more...

Lumet.

Has made a number of well-known films, so if I get the chance to see one of his films, I usually don't pass it up. But above all, the man has made a lot of films, including a lot that represent very little.

The only thing that makes this film remarkable is the cast. Connery, Hoffman and Broderick are three big names that are united here. That is the best said. The three of them don't know how to make much of this Family Business and Lumet also proves unable to add anything as a director.

Comedy is probably a bit strong, it is mainly crime with some family drama, but the light-hearted way in which it is all presented ensures that it is still manageable. 110 minutes is a bit excessive for a trifle like this, but for once it's not a complete disaster. I can't be much more positive about it.

1.5*

Reasonable film about a grandfather, father and son who work together for the first time on a burglary. Not a standard heist film, for that the emphasis is a bit too much on the family ties. The first half is a bit on the boring side because of this, but this is partly compensated by the fine cast with Sean Connery in the lead.
