De Inbreker plot

Glimmie is a seasoned burglar. He receives an offer of 3000 guilders from a banker to track down his runaway stepdaughter. He and his buddy Bonk accept the offer. However, they soon discover that something is not right. The banker appears to have set a trap for the girl. The two burglars find the girl and house her safely. It turns out not to be really safe, because she is killed with Glimmies stiletto and of course nobody believes that he didn't do it.

Yesterday, a beautiful (restored) print was shown at EYE, and I was particularly impressed. Ferenc Kálmán-Gáll's cinematography was also impressive; it's strange that he made so few feature films.

Move up to 4*!

We should not be too harsh in judging when seeing or reviewing a film like this.

The thing is almost 50 years old and in that time many filmmakers have explored such subjects and a world of possibilities has opened up in terms of recording techniques.

Rijk de Gooyer is in fine form as the hero of the story... burglar, accused, detective... and carries the film, as it were, while also conveying the seriousness of the crime, which always lurks somewhere behind the scenes and yet doesn't exactly oversimplify. The prostitution scene is presented in an innocent and humorous way (courtroom). Anny de Lange and Sylvie de Leur also give good performances, and Willeke van Ammelrooy unfortunately didn't stay long.

It remains an enjoyable film. Certainly in line with, and not inferior to, many films that reached us from more affluent countries at the time.

Then it was possible.

Now, I have to say I have a soft spot for this film. The book "of the film" has been in the family since time immemorial (well, my memory). With so many photos in it, you hardly needed to go to the cinema anymore. Although, Willeke van Ammelrooy with moving images does add something.

But meanwhile, it's undeniably remarkable how those few images have so firmly lodged themselves in my memory that the entire film becomes a kind of feast of recognition. But besides that, it's also a truly excellent film in its own right—and it starts off strong with the extremely clichéd safe scene—but that one is also by the book.

And then there's the height of nostalgia. The images of old Amsterdam, the vintage cars I still remember from my youth. The friendly atmosphere among the people, the acceptance of everything that didn't quite fit. It's enough to make you melancholic.

Most surprising, actually, is that it was apparently possible back in the day (back in the day!) to find decent actors for a film. Or perhaps Frans Weisz is the only one who can get those overblown Dutch celebrities to play them—I honestly don't think I've actually seen any of his films besides this one. Either way, newfound respect for Rijk de Gooijer, who would have thought?
